What makes a southern gothic novel, and what does not
The setting gets the credit and the silence does the work. A look at the genre through two novels written twenty years apart.

Ask for a definition of southern gothic and you tend to get a list of props: heat, moss, a decaying house, a family with money it no longer has. Those are set dressing. Plenty of novels assemble all four and remain firmly outside the genre.
Readers who know the form know the essential ingredient is not the setting but the silence, the things families agree not to say. Everything else follows from that agreement and from what happens when it fails.
The genre is a mechanism, not a mood
A southern gothic novel needs a buried thing and a community with reasons to keep it buried. The heat and the architecture are useful because they slow everyone down and keep them in proximity, but a story with the same mechanism works in a cold climate. It would just need a different excuse for why nobody leaves.
What the genre does better than any other is show the arithmetic of concealment: what a secret costs per year, who pays, and what the interest rate turns out to be when it finally comes due.
An origin point in 1977
Southern Comfort was Michael Largo's debut, published by New Earth Books in 1977. It is a southern gothic tale that established his voice as a storyteller with a particular angle on American culture and character: the unblinking eye, the fascination with human extremity, the conviction that the darkest material makes the most honest literature.
Read now, it functions as the origin point of a fifty year catalog. The habits visible in it are the ones that later produced encyclopedias of mortality.
The sequel names the thesis
Lies Within, published by Tropical Press in 1997, continues the saga twenty years later. The title is the argument in three words: what lies within a family, a town, or a person tends to surface on its own schedule, and rarely at a convenient time.
The pairing is instructive for anyone interested in how a writer's obsessions travel. The same excavation runs through both novels, and then through everything that came after.
Where the fiction led
The fascination with what people hide, and what the hiding costs them, later fuelled the encyclopedias of death and extremity that made the author's name. Fiction was where he first practiced the excavation. Final Exits, which won the Bram Stoker Award, is the same instinct applied to public records instead of invented families.

Reading order
Southern Comfort first, then Lies Within, since the second continues the first. Both sit in the fiction catalog alongside Welcome to Miami, a satirical novel aimed at a city where the improbable is the local weather.
The next novel returns to this territory. Ten Years of Desire is maritime noir and grit lit, carrying the tagline: some secrets lie too deep, some gifts cost too much. The mechanism, as ever, is the buried thing.
